Pets are great
to have around the house. They provide entertainment, love, friendship,
compassion, and literally become a member of many families.
When you are
moving, having a pet can turn into a nightmare. You need to consider the well-being
of your pet while taking into consideration stress levels and emotions. Moving can cause your pet to become
depressed, scared and anxious. Here are some tips from the ASPCA
on how to handle moving your pet(s) into a new home – making
the moving process an enjoyable experience for all!
When packing,
let your pets (especially cats and dogs), explore and sniff the boxes. Cats
especially do not handle change very well.
Allowing them to adjust through their senses will make the moving
process easier.
Most animals do
not spend much time (if any) in crates. However, crates can be very convenient when
you are moving. If you are planning on using a crate for your cat or dog, drive
around the neighborhood and allow them to get used to the crate slowly. As time goes by, increase the amount of time your
pet spends in the crate, and if it’s possible, you can even drive them to the
new home while in the crate. On moving day, it will make your moving experience
much easier – and you more than likely will not deal with a whining dog or cat.
Upon entering
your new home, keep your dog(s) on a leash and walk them around the house. Dogs
and cats can smell things that we cannot smell.
For example, they can smell accidents from previous pets in the house.
Bring your pets into one room in the house and allow them to adjust slowly.
Make sure they have all their favorite toys.
Most importantly, spend time with them so they feel secure.
