There are so many great holidays – but this one just seems to sound
so yummy and delicious. Saturday is actually Sticky Bun Day! And, since
all of us live so close to Philadelphia – it’s interesting to learn that
the origin of sticky buns happened right here in Pennsylvania.
Sticky
buns – they aren’t good for you at all but they taste wonderful
(although most things that aren’t good for you taste great!). During the
18th century, the Pennsylvania Dutch created a “schnecken”,
which was essentially the original sticky bun. It consisted of a
sweetened yeast dough which was rolled in layers of brown sugar,
cinnamon and drizzled with maple syrup.
Prior to the 18th
century, ancient Egyptians would add honey and nuts to their bread –
which could be the very beginning to the sticky bun craving all of us
have today!
So, now that you’re hungry, spend this coming Saturday, February 21st,
enjoying some sticky buns. You can either bake them yourself, or visit
one of our many local bakeries to take part in this delicious holiday. A
very popular bakery which is well-known for homemade sticky buns, is Fritz’s Bakery located in Langhorne.
